We Franciscans are challenged to live an integrated life through prayer, community, and our ministry to serve the poor, neglected and disadvantaged youth, the powerless, people in need, and the elderly. We live by our vows of poverty (living in simplicity), chastity (living in love with all), and obedience (living and witnessing the Gospel).

Brother John Hoever, Our Founder

John Hoever’s character was molded by a devout, watchful mother and a practical, pious father. At fourteen, his father insisted he work on the family farm thus interrupting his schooling. The intervention of an understanding country teacher providentially enabled him to resume his educational career.

This cast the decisive direction that was to mold him in his life’s vocation as an educator. Utilizing his own native wit and intelligence, John went on to complete his formal education.

Following his first teacher appointment in 1837, in Aix-la-Chapelle, Germany, John became aware of the unfortunate aspects that industrialization was causing within German society. The unfortunate victims, especially the children, motivated him to act.

With compassion and understanding he responded, “I too had a problem in charity to solve: these poor must be served, their standard of living raised!” His spirit had a natural inclination for this challenge. He sought to create an awareness of God through practical works of charity.

The Brothers of the Poor of St. Francis were founded on Christmas Eve, 1857, by John Hoever at Aachen, Germany. John, a teacher, was concerned about the youth wandering the streets. He and his three followers pledged their lives to educating and caring for these youths.

Brother John’s followers came to the United States and established themselves in Cincinnati in 1868. As the years passed, the Franciscan Brothers moved into other cities and ministries. They remain in solidarity with the needs of the poor and the powerless.

The years have brought, and will continue to bring change. To accomplish their mission, the Franciscan Brothers constantly adapt their activities of service to the needs of the Church and society according to their ability and resources. They stay faithful to the admonition of their Founder, Brother John Hoever, to be Instruments of His Kingdom When and Where He Chooses.
