The Brothers of the Poor of St. Francis |
Francis imitated Christ in his time... established a religious brotherhood, a sisterhood, and an association of lay people... and in the solitude of the abandoned and dilapidated chapel of San Damiano prayed before a Byzantine cross to the Lord to enlighten him, to dispel his weariness, to increase his faith, and above all to guide him according to the Divine Will. In response, the Lord allowed him to find perfect peace and joy, which attracted others to seek him out and follow his Gospel Way of Life. Francis, the Poor Man of Assisi, remains the popular saint in our modern times, firstly, because of his close imitation of Jesus Christ the same Christ of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. As Christ is of today; so then, too, is Francis of Assisi. Francis’ constant praise of Almighty God in song, in his love for the preservation of nature and its creatures, in his ability to cross lines of medieval society to embrace the poverty, the leprosy, the contemporary environmental dilemmas of his day all of these relate this holy man to our modern day and time. The transcendence of Francis and the issues of his day to comparable concern of our era plus the great distinction of literally “putting on the Jesus Christ” of the Gospel and His attitudes accords Francis of Assisi the title “Saint of our Times.” ![]() Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow...
